FINAL RESULTS
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Day 1
2:30 PM - The Coed Dinghy Championship started around 12:00 PM with winds ESE
around 14 mph. Boats recalled after the second B-Division races due to a
developing weather system off the coast headed WSW. Still sunny skies outside
but clouds on the horizon. Better safe than sorry. First two sets sailed up
river due to an easterly breeze and were gold cups.
4:31 PM - Weather did not materialize and boats were sent back out around 3:00
PM. Wind has been pretty consistent all day and brief cloudy skies have turned
to mostly sunny. Temperature in the 80s. Time between races has increased as
boats are rotating back at the dock instead of the inside of the outer wall due
to a strong ebb tide and east wind making rotating out there difficult (on the
boats and racers).
5:12 PM - Winds 15 mph SSE. Boats rotating back at dock pretty quickly.
A-Division should start by 5:20-5:25 PM. Racing taking place more in the harbor
nearer to the oservation barge this mid afternoon making viewing easier on the
fans.
6:18 PM - Racing in an average wind speed of 12 mph SSE. Competition over for
the day. Turned out to be a nice day with a steady breeze that provided good
and competitve racing. The final races of the day were sailed more downward
closer to the marina side due to more of a southeasterly breeze and were gold
and olympic cups. All in all good day of racing. The shorter amount of races
sets up for a long day of sailing tomorrow.
Day 2
11:07 AM - Racing started for the day at 9:45 AM. Average wind speed at 8 mph
SSE. Isolated storms threaten the area but thus far have stayed to the East. A
lot of good racing yet to come.
12:22 PM - Racing at an average wind speed of 10 mph SSE. Races slowed a bit
due to boats having to roatate at the sailing center. The outer wall is being
used for a local fishing tournament today and tomorrow. Storm still around us
but the nice sea breeze is keeping them away.
1:57 PM - Both division have now sailed eight races. Average wind speed 11 mph
S. Racing taking place near the observation barge for good viewing.
2:57 PM - Average wind speed 11 mph in a southerly direction. Partly cloudy
with isolated t-storms staying to the west.
4:17 PM - Schedule is to sail one more set in each division before ending for
the day. Average wind speed was around 12 mph during racing with a southerly
direction.
5:23 PM - Average wind speed 10 mph S. Georgetown has emerged as a new leader
today but Harvard and College of Charleston are close behind. Setting up for a
good finish tomorrow.
6:31 PM - All boats are in for the day. Several protests were heard resulting
in four DSQs.
Day 3
9:45 AM - Boats are out. Racing has begun. Average wind speed 13 mph WSW.
10:44 AM - First set in. Average wind speed 15 mph WSW. Clear and beautiful day
down in Charleston. Already in the 80s so should be another hot one.
11:49 AM - Winds averaging 12 mph still WSW. Looking like the championship will
come down to the wire.
12:54 PM - Winds averaging 13 mph WSW.
1:59 PM - Winds averaging 18 mph SSW. Good breezes and cooperative tides
creating great conditions for racing.
2:45 PM - wind continues to pick up, now averaging 19 mph SSW. Racing right in
front of the observation barge.
3:08 PM - Wind speed averaging 19 mph. Only six points separate first and
second place. Sets up for a good finish.
3:58 PM - Average wind speed 19 mph SW. Georgetown has taken a slight lead. All
comes down to race 18B. Exciting! 4:54 PM - The College of Charleston placed
fourth in the final race to win the 2006 ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship.
Races today were sailed in olympic and gold cups.
Congratulations to the winners and all that competed in this year's event.
Special thanks go to the College of Charleston sailors for their hard work in
making this regatta run so smoothly. Thanks also go to the judges for helping
make this competition fair and enjoyable.
