I understand the benefit of this new requirement, but this isn't
really a valid way to look at how to run a smaller club team. Our
sailors are our primary source of income, paying for practically all
of our expenses. Our school gives us next to nothing, and
fundraising is difficult when we all also need to put in time fixing
boats, training new recruits, and of course practicing. Passing
another cost on to the individuals is not really an option.
Yes, this sport could be more spectator-friendly, and efforts to
raise our profile is a good idea. But one of the largest barriers we
face is cost. We lose members every year due to inability to pay
even decreased dues, and we're not even in the worst shape. Our team
has recently been in contact with some new and smaller teams,
including CSUN, LMU, and CSU Channel Islands. If you want to build
up the sport, the way to do it is through teams like them. And the
way to help these teams is not to increase the costs they need to
pay. In my opinion, if large, high-budget teams took the money they
were spending on pinnies and used it to buy cheap sails or other
necessities for teams that don't have them, it would do a lot more
good for the sport as a whole. If you guys would prefer to raise
your visibility, I respect that decision, go ahead and buy pinnies,
but it doesn't seem necessary to require us to spend our money that
way too, when we have other pressing needs that we can barely meet.

We are very
satisfied. Our supply will probably last three years but we are
charging the
sailors $20 each, and $40 if someone loses a shirt and must
purchase another
one. One suggestion, have them numbered. We didn't and it was an
oversight.
