The 2007 ISAF Team Racing World Championship is back on the sailing
calendar, following a late bid by the Real Club Nautico Gandia to
host the Championship in late September. In its seventh edition, the
ISAF Team Racing Worlds is heading for the Mediterranean, with
Gandia, Spain, 70 km south of Valencia, set to play host to a feast
of short races, small course and supreme boat handling skills.

Overlooked by the Real Club Nautico Gandia clubhouse, Gandia’s port,
the breakwater and marina will form an amphitheatre, providing
spectators with a spectacular view of this spectacular sailing
discipline.
With short courses, races-a-plenty and frenetic action guaranteed,
team racing is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Gandia should provide
conditions similar to those facing the America’s Cup teams a little
further south along the Mediterranean coast at Valencia. A 6-8 knot
northeasterly sea breeze starts around 11:00, moving round to a
southwesterly and building up to 16 knots through the day. With
weather conditions between 22-26°C and sunny blue skies, the late
September date will provide the ideal bridge between the end of the
European team racing season and the start of racing down under.
With the racing area sheltered by the breakwater and marina, the
courses have little waves or swell – ideal conditions for team racing.
Bumper Anniversary Year
As well as 2007 being ISAF’s Centenary year, it also marks the 50th
anniversary of the Real Club Nautico Gandia, with the ISAF Team
Racing World Championship providing a centrepiece to their celebrations.

Racing will take place in 20 supplied 420s, with a weight limit of
130 kg per crew per boat. For the first time, the Worlds will be
joined by an Under 21 competition (as approved by the ISAF Council in
November 2006). ISAF Member National Authorities (MNAs) may enter up
to three teams but not more than two per competition.

Chris ATKINS (GBR), Chairman of the ISAF Team Racing Sub-Committee,
was excited when visiting the venue last week, 'We know that six
months notice is not ideal, but it will be a fantastic sailing event!
Perfect venue, excellent club and organizers with a lot of
experience! It can’t be better!'
Rafa GONZALEZ, Competition Director of the Real Federación Española
de Vela, 'We are very proud that the ISAF Team Racing Worlds will
take place in Spain in ISAF’s Centenary year. The waters of the Bay
of Valencia will be a the focus for sailors from all around the World
from April with the last Louis Vuitton Act, the America’s Cup and
will end the Team Racing event in Gandia.'
