FINAL RESULTS
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Saturday Highlights: Sunny but cold morning with increasing clouds
throughout day dropping temperture further. Light winds 2-10 anywhere from
Northeast to Southwest made setting courses difficult since major shifts would
roll in within the 3 minute sequence. Many abandoned starts, many general
recalls, 3 races abandoned before the weather mark. Courses were Gold Cups,
and one Triangle-Windward. Three races sailed in each division. One minor
breakdown between races, one protest, no capsizes, many cold hands and feet,
and lots of disappointed souls as there was much wait time between actual races
and with the racing being so tough due to instability. Very tight racing
though and many, many close finishes. Much appreciation goes to the
competitors who hung in there with smiles on and a shrug "oh well", rather than
pulling out the tar and feather for the RC. On a positive note of comfort and
safety, BU provided portable toilets and EMT's for the weekend (and will for
our next two hosted regattas).
Sunday Highlights: What a difference a day makes. Cold, partly sunny day
with winds from the west at 12-18kts. Breeze was still unsteady with long
shifts ranging a good 40 degrees but much more manageable than the previous
day, and with fun velocity. Five races sailed in each division. Courses were
Windward-Leewards twice around (8), one modified Windward-Leeward, and a
Windward-Leeward 2.5 times around for the last race. No breakdowns, no
protests, only one general recall, a good number of capsizes but not too many
simultaneously, and one full speed grounding by the home team. My guess is
competitors were mighty tired after a great day of sailing. Many thanks to the
additional support of lower basin coaches Mike O'Connor and Matt Lindblatt for
their excellent capsize recovery assists. Once again the racing was tight
though the finishes were a bit more spread out in the big breeze and lengthy
courses.
