UC-Irvine Leads After Day One Of 2007 ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship

Annapolis, Md. (May 30, 2007) - While it may not be scientifically sound,
empirical data is often very accurate - possibly never more so than in the
case of the two schools selected for the at-large berths to the 2007
ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship. Both the University of
California-Irvine (Irvine, Calif.) and Brown University (Providence, R.I.)
made it into the national championship courtesy of the at-large berths which
used empirical data and observations after 16 other colleges qualified
through the seven ICSA North American conference eliminations. Today, after
seven races apiece in A- and B-Divisions, UC-Irvine and Brown are leading
the overall standings at 72 and 84 points, respectively, with two days of
competition remaining. UC-Irvine has won this championship twice previously
(1988 and 1990), while Brown would make school history were they to
ultimately prevail. Not to be discounted are a number of possible spoilers
nipping at the heels of the lead pair: the defending champions from the
College of Charleston (Charleston, S.C.) are third with 86 points, Dartmouth
College (Hanover, N.H.) follows with 88, and only one point separates
Stanford University (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Yale University (New Haven,
Conn.) at 94 and 95 points, respectively, in fifth and sixth places.

Hosted by the US Naval Academy, day one racing at the ICSA/Gill Coed
National Championship (May 30-June 1), saw "excellent conditions" evolve out
of a "glassy" start on the Severn River. Racing took place right in front of
the Academy - in sea breeze around 8-12 knots - to give spectators a great
view of the action.

"We are sticking to our game plan and so far it has played out," said
UC-Irvine Head Coach Mike Pinckney. "Keep it simple, get off the line, sail
smart and try to keep in our lanes. We are trying to think long-term up the
course."

UC-Irvine's senior skipper Frank Tybor (Coronado, Calif.), sailing with crew
Emma Nilsson (Woodland Hills, Calif.), a sophomore, and junior Megan Pluth
(San Diego, Calif.), leads the A-Division standings on 32 points. UC-Irvine
seniors Will Pochereva (Kailua, Hawaii) and Whitney Loufek (Newport Harbor,
Califl) are fourth in B-Division with 40 points, behind Dartmouth (31
points), Yale (37) and Stanford (39). Complete results and photos are at:

The Details: The ICSA National Championships sponsored by PENTAX Imaging
Company and Vanguard Sailboats brings together sailors representing seven
North American conference. In the Coed event, each of the 18 schools fields
a separate A and B division team. Weather permitting, each division sails
eighteen 20- to 30-minute fleet races over three days for a total of 36
races. A team's final score is determined by the combined results of its
sailors in A and B divisions. Conference eliminations qualified 16 colleges
for the coed championship, with an additional two teams selected at-large.
