New England Sloop Championship
Sail Newport/Brown University
September 22-23, 2007
1:39 PM 9-23-07
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Saturday: A nice southerly greeted the competitors at 9:30am. All races were
sailed in 6-12 knots with lots of oscillations and current in Sail Newport's
three year old fleet of J-22s. Courses were W4 (W/L/W/L), W6 (W/L/W/L/W/L),
and a W3 (W/L/W) to end the day. One protest that was disallowed between UNH
and BC from race one. Coast Guard and Tufts each took 20% penalties in race 6.
Three more races remaining for Sunday. Top two qualify for the ICSA Sloop
National Championship.
Sunday: A dying northerly breeze throughout the day which started at around
10-12 knots for the first race. The second race it was down to 7-10 knots and
4-7 knots for the last race. Courses were W6, and W4's. Racing took place
between Goat and Rose Islands just south of the Newport Bridge. It came down
to the last race between Boston College and Brown for second place and the last
qualifying spot to Sloop Nationals. Boston College prevailed and Connecticut
College won the event. One protest between Tufts and Conn College that was
disallowed. Great thanks to Don Becker for coming over after the Prince of
Wales Team Race Championship at the New York Yacht Club to hear the protest.
Special thanks to Kim Hapgood and the entire Sail Newport staff for opening
their great facility to NEISA and college sailing. Thanks to Dr. Tom Enright
for being the coaches boat, and to Chase Hogoboom (Brown '02), Avram Robbins
(Brown '04.5), Isaac Stoner (Brown '07), Malay Khamsyvoravong (Brown '09), and
Lucy Seyfarth (Brown '10) for race committee and mark boat help. Thanks as
well to our judges Mike Campbell (URI '05), Rob MacMillan (Quantum Sails
Newport), and Alex Mehran (Brown '02) for judging and helping on the water.
