REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: Co-hosted by Fordham & Columbia universities, which sail out of Morris Yacht & Beach Club and City Island Yacht Club respectively, on City Island, Bronx, NY, this regatta was sailed on Western Long Island Sound. Seven teams participated and sailed in Fordham's fleet of 420s. Army was a "No Show," and there were two DSQs for going through a "Closed gate." The fleet was greeted with an oscillating 3-5 knot westerly breeze in the morning, which became a steady 12-15 knot southwesterly after lunch. Sixteen races were sailed and the regatta was called after one day.
Participants enjoyed a feast of the world's best bagels and cream cheese upon arrival, clam chowder and Italian bread for lunch, and cheesecake following the races. One competitor, who was obviously an aficionado in such matters, was overheard to exclaim, "Wow, this cheesecake is even better than Junior's in Brooklyn," which is probably why Zagat's chose the cheesecake from S&S Bakery in the Bronx as "The best cheesecake in NYC." For helping run a well organized regatta, special thanks go to Columbia alumni Will Hubbard, Jonathan Epstein and the Columbia sailors, who manned the Columbia safety boat; Fordham alumni John Good '58, who provided his 45' Hunter sailboat GOOD 'N PLENTY as Race Committee boat; Chris Mortko '00, who manned the Fordham safety boat YARD SAIL with Eric Jochum '10, plus Assistant Coach Charles "Bud" McEntee '72, who helped run the races and was the Official Scorer. Congratulations to Fordham sailors Alex Baum '08, Phil Krug '11, Joe Turchiano '11 and Annie Carroll '10, who won the first annual, coed "RAMS-LIONS Big Apple Classic."
