For the first time ever, the Jesuit School Intersectional has become an
"Open" event and we want to extend an invitation and warm welcome to all ICSA
teams
to participate in this historical regatta on September 27-28, 2008.
The Jesuit Cup Regatta was founded in 1955 so one of the three Jesuit schools
in MAISA, Fordham, Georgetown & St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia, could
have bragging rights among their brethren. In 1958, it was expanded to include
Jesuit schools from other conferences and the University of Detroit was the
first non-MAISA school to capture The Cup. Georgetown dominated this event over
the years but Holy Cross and Boston College occasionally brought The Cup to
NEISA. After Fordham won this event in 1971 and 1972, and its program dissolved
in 1973, the regatta took a 27-year hiatus until 2002, two years after
Fordham's Sailing team was resurrected.
Initially, it returned as the Jesuit School Invitational but once Jesuit
schools from NEISA (Holy Cross) & MCSA (Marquette & John Carroll) participated,
it
became the Jesuit School Intersectional and in a nod toward ecumenism,
participation was opened to non-Jesuit, Catholic colleges and attracted teams
from
Notre Dame, Providence and Villanova.
The regatta has become a very appealing, Intersectional event characterized
by good solid competition at a beautiful sailing site on Eastchester Bay and
Long Island Sound with the Manhattan skyline in the background; delicious food;
camaraderie, and fun for all participants.
However, to assure that all 10 boats in our fleet are being used and to raise
the level of competitiveness even further, now all ICSA schools are WELCOME
and invited to participate. Just let me know by return e-mail with a copy to
your Graduate Secretary. Current 2008 participants are Fordham, Georgetown,
Loyola, Providence & Villanova. Five more berths are available and participants
will be accepted on a first come - first served basis.
The winner takes home a "loaner" plaque for one year and its name is engraved
on the beautiful, 53-year old perpetual plaque, which is maintained
permanently at the Vincent T. Lombardi Memorial Center on the Rose Hill campus
of
Fordham University.
We hope that you will join us!
