Dear college sailors, coaches, and fans; As some of you may have heard, Sailing World is going to change the way we do our twice-monthly college rankings. After many years of using a panel of three judges, we are opening it up and following a methodology similar to that of the AP College Football Coaches Poll: one vote for every school.
This is a move we¹ve considered in the past, often at the prodding of coaches or sailors, but have decided against simply because the challenge of polling all the eligible coaches was too great. Now, however, we believe we¹ve found an efficient solution using an online survey site. This isn¹t to say that we feel the work put in by our three panelists has been anything but exemplary. They¹ve done a thorough and thoughtful job each and every ranking. Even with the increased voting pool, I think it will be hard to match their collective level of expertise when it comes to ranking the top teams in the country. We would like to extend one vote to every team with a coach. I realize this cuts out some of the smaller club teams who do not have a coach. However, at this time, we feel it¹s best to restrict undergraduates from the voting process. This coach can be full-time, part-time, volunteer, or a graduate assistant. We only ask that they take the time to vote thoughtfully every two weeks during the spring and fall seasons. As the members of our previous panel will tell you, picking the top 20 coed and top 15 women¹s teams is not as easy as it may seem. To get this started, we¹ll need to accredit any coach wishing to participate in the voting. To start the process, we¹ve set up a simple questionnaire below. Please answer the questions and reply to [email protected]. For teams with more than one coach, I ask that you decide amongst yourselves who will do the voting, and then have that person, and that person only, reply. Thank you in advance for your participation now, and as the spring season gets underway.
