Saturday started out light and the fleet was held on shore until after 1000
while we waited for wind. We headed out and started race 1 shortly before
1100 in a 4 knot Southeasterly off Triton Point. The breeze died while that
race was finishing and the racecourse was moved further up the Severn River
Near Hospital Point where there was a pocket of breeze to conduct the rest
of the first round. While the wind was light and shifty for most of the
day, PRO Gavin O' Hare and his team of midshipmen did a terrific job of
getting off quality races in challenging conditions. Chris Petracco, Ramsey
Key and Herb Larrabee served as umpires and we tried out an experimental
system of having the two coaches whose teams were competing in each race
serve as the second limited umpire. The system worked well in that only one
protest was heard and disallowed and every other incident was settled on the
water. At the end of the day, Navy, South Florida and Brown found
themselves tied for third place and needed to compete in a sail off to
determine the final two teams that moved on to the championship round at
Georgetown on Sunday. USF beat Navy in the first race by breaking up Navy's
1,2 on the last beat and converting to a 2,3,4. Navy was able to hold its
lead in the next race against Brown to stay alive. In the final race of the
sail off, USF got of to a strong start and held a solid lead around the
course until Brown was able to force a foul on the last beat which lead to
all the boats closing in on the finish line simultaneously. When it was
all sorted out, USF had crossed in a 1,3,6 and ensured a spot in the
championship round along with Charleston, Boston College and Navy.
