The New England Team Racing Championship for the Fowle Trophy
Hosted by Roger Williams University
May 9-10

Highlights: To run the event is a huge undertaking and before we get to the
highlights, I have many thank you's to acknowledge. First, we had a huge squad
of umpires here this Mother's Day weekend. John Pearce, Brad Dellenbaugh,
Frank Pizzo, George Crocker, John Tagliamonte, John Pratt, Greg Kiely, Jamie
Ewing, Rick Sullivan, Jeff Sullivan, Kerry Sullivan, Dan Thompson, Clay
Johnson, Leo Berendes, Kyle Kovacs, David Meleney, Matthew Knowles and Peter
Johns chose to give up some quality time with mom and missed the excitement of
the Volvo in port races to make the NE Team Race Champs a great regatta. A
special thanks goes out to Peter Johns and ChUmp Matt Knowles for rounding up
the troops and leading the troops respectively.

Next thank you goes out to Danny Rabin for volunteering his weekend by
tactfully negotiating between the coaches and the Race Committee in the
capacity of NEISA rep.

Brad Churchill deserves three rounds of applause for putting together the NEISA
BBQ on Saturday, for providing several forms of entertainment (pictures to
follow on Sailgroove), and for picking up the MIT storm jibs on Saturday, just
in case.

To run the event successfully, we needed 14+ powerboats which we had to pool
from everywhere. Thanks go out to the Connecticut College Sailing team,
Portsmouth Abbey, Michael O'Connor, the URI sailing team, Laser Performance,
the Gunnarsson Family, the Enright Family, RWU Vice President John King, RWU
Marine and Natural Sciences, and the Coast Guard Academy.

Next, nearly all of RWU Sailing team devoted the weekend (just before finals)
to making the event run smoothly. I think they did a fantastic job. Thanks team.

And last but not least, infinite thanks to Colin Merrick and Joel Hanneman for
running the event and getting a lot of races in.

Saturday: The twelve teams were seeded into two groups of six. Due to a lack of
breeze and a lot of current, the round robin for the first group didn't get
started until just before noon, at which time a 5-10 southerly arrived. Group B
got underway a few hours later. At the conclusion of the round robins, the top
four from each moved on to the Gold Eight. In the second group Tufts, Vermont,
and Connecticut College were in a three way tie for the last two spots. A
sail-off was raced and the tie remained. Another sail-off raced, and still the
tie stood, but the sun was setting and racing was called for the day. It was
decided that no more sail offs would take place and after a late night in
redress hearing, Connecticut College and Tufts would get the last two spots
once the points were counted. Mike O'Connor announced the All-NEISA awards in
the dark.

Sunday: A very strong westerly breeze greeted competitors. The race committee
was able to finish two Gold Eight Round Robins before the time limit with a
short break for lunch. Up until the end things were very tight, and the
qualifying spots were determined in the last few races.

Congratulations to Boston College, Yale and Harvard on qualifying for Nationals.
