Flying V Soars at the 6th Chix Only Team Race
The forecast was not optimal for 6th Annual Chix Only Team Race - a high
percentage of rainy, cool weather and not a lot of breeze. But the rain held
off all day, and the sun even came out for a little while. The day turned out
to be a great one with a nice, light to medium breeze from SSE and flat water,
perfect team race conditions for the 6.5 competing teams. (Team Seventh Heaven
consisted of 2 boats, and a boat from whichever team had a bye.)
The veteran race committee, consisting of Colin Merrick, Reid Van Gorder, and
Joel Hanneman, was able to get 2 round robins in and a final 4 round over the
course of the day. After the first round, the scores were close; both Flying V
and Biggie Shorty each had a loss, and The Hotness and the Brownies were tied
with 2 losses. The Rochester Juniors, a young team who traveled out from
Rochester, NY, showed very promising boat speed, but it didn’t come through in
the results.
At the conclusion of the second round, The Hotness and Seventh Heaven were tied
and vying for the last spot into the final four. Coming into the leeward mark,
the race was close, with a slight advantage to Seventh Heaven, but a well
executed leeward mark rounding put The Hotness in good position which they
carried to the finish.
The top three spots were up for grabs going into the final four; Flying V had
ten wins and both the Brownies and Biggie Shorty had nine wins. Biggie Shorty
bested the Brownies in the first race, and then suffered a loss to the Flying
V. At that point, the regatta had already been decided, but the last race
between the Flying V and the Brownies was an exciting one. In the races where
the two teams meet before, the Brownies managed miraculous come-from-behind
wins at the finish line. But in the last race the Flying V managed to hold it
together and sailed cleanly into the finish for the race win and the title.
Patagonia donated some gear to the event, and at the conclusion of the day, the
Rochester Juniors received a bag for traveling the greatest distance, and
Maragret Rew of Seventh Heaven was named the Sportswoman.
One unique thing about the Chix Only is that you can register as a
boat, as two boats, or as a team. When the Chix Only started six years ago,
there weren’t many female team racing skippers out there, much less whole teams
of women, hence the registration format. Team racing has progressed in the
ensuing years, allowing a weight allowance for teams with female skippers at
events like the Hinman and the Charles River Open, and the addition of women’s
collegiate team racing events. All of these changes have contributed to the
high level of team racing demonstrated this year at the Chix Only. Until next
year…
The Chix Only is the first of many events this summer put together by the Rhode
Island Team Racing Association. See "coverage" on Sailgroove.com for photos.
