April 7th 2010 Coed - Sean Kelly '10 and crew Jessica Schember '12 - California Maritime Academy
Sean Kelly '10 and crew Jessica Schember '12 for their A division win at the St. Francis Intersectional at St. Francis Yacht Club, CA. Sean and Jessica sailed a consistent regatta, never scoring higher than a 8th, in weird and tough conditions. Day 1 of St. Francis was a more typical San Fran day with a 12-18kt. westerly and a 3.5 kt flood, Sean and Jessica played the current the best all day including during the switch to the ebb current at the end of Saturday. On day 2 the weather completely changed and was now a strong southerly gusting over the city from 5-25 kts with huge puffs and auto tacks coming down. The Race course had to be close to shore due to the shipping lanes and the current was a big factor as well with the ebb switching to a flood during mid day, cross course current that changed strength as you sailed up the course. All of these challenging factors did not phase this duo as they started well and kept fighting for their position throughout each race. The fleet would invert and they would battle back. Sean and Jessica won their division by 18 pts. and carried their team to a 14 pt. victory overall in the regatta. They had an amazingly consistent regatta against the best women's competition in the country with 8 top-5 finishes, only 1 outside the top 7 in 14 races. They kept their struggling A division in the regatta until the end and beat Brown in the last 2 races, putting 8 points on them in the last set to come from behind and win the regatta. The BC team came from 25 points down in the last set to pass Brown, doing so in 10 knot southerly (very normal conditions when all 18 boats are similar speed). The level of competition at this event was impressive; it was the premier women's regatta of the weekend.
