On Friday, May 7, the Fordham University Sailing Association hosted its 60/10 
Anniversary Dinner at the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan. This occasion 
marked the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the Sailing Association in 1950 
and the 10th Anniversary of the rebirth of the Sailing Team in 2000. University 
President Fr. Joseph McShane, S. J. welcomed the 164 guests and US Sailing 
President Gary Jobson was the keynote speaker. Among those in attendance were 
Commodore Steve Breines of the Morris Yacht & Beach Club on City Island, 
Executive Director of Athletics Frank McLaughlin, and Fordham alumnus & Rear 
Commodore, New York Yacht Club, Tom Harrington, who also welcomed the assembled 
sailors and guests..

The packed program included saluting the 23 current members of the Sailing 
Team, who concluded the best season in the program's history; inaugurating a 
Fordham Sailing Hall of Fame, which honored four Co-Founders, Louis T. Piccoli 
'52, Richard J. Russo '52, Jean "Jack" Liegey '52 and John F. Schmitt '53, the 
latter two posthumously, plus Charles "Bud" McEntee '72, former Commodore and 
MAISA Undergraduate President, and Katherine G. Murphy '06, former Team 
Captain. Special Friends of Fordham Sailing Paul Laddomada & Maura Mandrano of 
Sailmaker Marine on City Island, Detective Christopher Scallon of the Norfolk, 
VA Police Department, and Meg Johantgen & Lauri Matijas, Annapolis, MD were 
also recognized with commemorative plaques. In addition, kudos were extended to 
Alexandra, Joseph & Gabriella Macari '09 of Macari Vineyards, Mattituck, NY for 
supplying the wine during the reception and dinner, and Chris Garrity '87 of 
Richardson's Maptech, New Bedford, MA, who provided a generous supply of 
Cruising Guides for a drawing during the evening.

This gala event was the culmination of a fundraising campaign to finance the 
acquisition of a replacement fleet of 10 brand new 420 sailboats from Zim 
Sailing; five pre-owned FJs from Columbia University and a 19' Grady White Race 
Committee Boat plus fund the employment of a professional coach starting with 
the fall 2010 season. The goal of $100,000 was exceeded by 50% as over $152,000 
of revenue was generated.

A week earlier, the Columbia University Sailing Team held a similar event on 
campus and over $102,000 was raised. Columbia is purchasing 10 brand new 420s 
from Zim Sailing, as well, and the two programs, which practice together out of 
Morris Yacht & Beach Club and City Island Yacht Club anticipate Co-Hosting 
MAISA & ICSA Intersectional events with their new 20-boat fleet.
