This weeks ICSA / US Sailing Sailors of the week are

 Medora Sletten

Graduating Senior
University of St. Thomas

Hometown: Bismarck, ND

This week’s female college sailor of the week is Medora Sletten from the
University of St. Thomas. Last weekend at University of Minnesota’s Gopher
Invite Medora placed 1st in the last 2 races to finish 2nd in A’s and
3rdoverall. Medora is a versatile sailor as a skipper, women’s
skipper, and
crew, taking on whatever role is asked of her. She has been recognized as an
MCSA All Conference Crew the past 2 years.

Medora has also led the University of St Thomas to increase their
competitive performance greatly over the past few years. The Tommies
qualified for Semi-finals the past two years, have placed well in many MCSA
events, and look forward to the continued improvement of their program.

James Dirkes

Junior: University of Colorado Boulder

Hometown: Irvine, CA

This week’s male college sailor of the week is James Dirkes from the
University of Colorado at Boulder. James has shown outstanding leadership
in his founding of the club team at University of Colorado Boulder. Boulder
is not known as a sailing hot spot and despite little to no resources James
has created a strong and thriving team that has traveled throughout the
SEISA Conference and has even traveled out to PCCSC to compete at St.
Francis YC. Through James's leadership the UCB team is now up and running
with boats, a new venue Union Reservoir in Longwood, CO and a travel team.
James acts as sailor, coach and even his own sports information officer
sending out weekly updates to team supporters. His commitment to college
sailing is admirable but James and his Boulder Sailing Club are also
promoting the sport of sailing in general. The mission statement of the
Boulder Sailing Club reads “We aim to bring sailing to the community of
Boulder, promote renewable, clean alternative energy sources, and catalyzing
societal awareness of environmental issues and acknowledgement of our
collective responsibility to work towards sustainable solutions”.

James’ leadership is a true example of how the efforts of one person can get
a school involved in college sailing and in turn help grow the sport of
sailing in the community.
