Saturday was a beautiful day of sailing for the 2010 Carl Van Duyne MAISA
Men's Single-handed Championship. The fleet headed out to the mouth of the
Severn River by Greenbury Point, where a windward leeward course was set.
The wind came from the Northwest all day, ranging in velocity from three to
ten knots. It was pretty puffy and shifty all day, but we stayed out and
ate lunch on the water so we could sail in the good conditions while we had
them. Since it was bright and sunny and near 80 degrees on the weekend of
the US Sailboat Show, the pleasure boat traffic was significant, and the
chop played a factor in the racing most of the afternoon. The tricky
conditions meant that everyone had to stay on their toes and even the best
sailors were capable of finishing deep in any race. PRO Kyle Assad and his
team of Midshipmen did a great job running fair races and 12 races were
completed before the wind shut off at the end of the day. Judges Herb
Larrabee and Scott Kirwin kept the fleet honest all day on the water and
heard one protest after racing, resulting in John Wallace from SMC receiving
a DSQ in race 12.

Racing continues tomorrow and the top 4 move on to compete in the ICSA Men's
Single-Handed Nationals in St. Petersburg, FL on November 5-7. Results from
the day can be found here:
