Great sailing conditions and close racing was the norm for the MAISA Match Race! Eight teams competed from MAISA for the right to qualify for the ICSA Match Racing Nationals at Kings Point on November 19-12.
Saturday's racing had great breeze NNW at 8-14 knots and current that changed and built mid-day to nearly 1 knot. Teams were seeded into two groups of four and sailed a double round robin in their group where the top two teams would advance to the semifinals. Racing was very close in Group A; St. Mary's won going 5-1 with ODU and KP tying for second place and Kings Point winning the tiebreaker based upon their win in the final match. Navy excelled in Group B going undefeated, while Georgetown took second. The semifinals paired group A winner St. Mary's against the second place Georgetown from group B and Navy (1st group B) against KP (2nd group A). The teams raced a knockout series to three points. After three races in the semifinals on Saturday, St. Mary's led Georgetown 2-1 in their semifinals while Navy led KP by the same margin. Teams 5-8 sailed a consolation round robin during the Semifinals. Racing would continue on Sunday to determine the qualifiers and MAISA Champ. On Sunday, competitors rigged in a NNW wind at 15-18 knots and completed the Semis. St. Mary's needed a win to wrap up their half and led wire-to-wire against the Hoyas. Things weren't quite as simple in the Navy-KP semis, where Kings Point managed to eke out a victory in the 4th race of the semis, putting the final qualifying berth on the line for the final race. KP led at the start and covered Navy on the first beat. Both teams gybe-set at the weather mark, KP ahead by 4 lengths but Navy able to gain towards the bottom of the run to round only one boatlength behind. KP gained on the beat and rounded the weather mark first, narrowly avoiding a surprise luff from the Navy boat still sailing upwind. Kings Point sailed on to win the race and get to three points, winning their side of the semis. In the finals, St. Mary's went 2-0 and secured the championship. They will be joined by KP at the nationals in two weeks. Many thanks to our outstanding umpire crew of Chief Umpire Chris Petracco, John Pratt, Phil Pape, Eric Johnson, Peter Wilson, Hans Graf, Henrik Pederson and Kevin Dooley!
