Since its inception in 1931 as a collegiate outdoor recreation program,
Hoofers continues to be one of the largest and most active outdoor programs
in the country.  Hoofers consists of six separate clubs: Sailing, Ski &
Snowboard, Outing, Riding, Mountaineering and SCUBA, as well as five
competitive collegiate teams.

*THE POSITION:*

The Head of Instruction for the Hoofer Sailing Club is responsible for
directing the instructional program of the Hoofer Sailing Club as well as
coordinating some of the fundraising and development activities of the club,
under the general direction and oversight of the Board of Captains, within
the stated mission of the Club.  There are approximately 1,300 University
students, faculty, staff, and Union members in the Club each year.  In
addition to regular club members, Hoofers instructs over 300 youth of ages
10-18 each summer through the Hoofer Youth Instruction Program. The Club
operates on the water from about April 25 - October 31, depending on the
weather.  During the peak season, from June 15 - August 1 (corresponding
somewhat to UW-Madison’s 8-week summer session), approximately 175 lessons
are offered each week by a staff of 50-70 volunteer and paid, part-time and
full-time instructors.  In addition to the Head of Instruction
responsibilities which make up 80% of the position, the person in this
position is also responsible for coaching the sailing team from late August
through early May, setting line ups, running practices and leading a spring
break training session.

*QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS*

1. BA or BS

2. At least 2 years of sailing instruction experience with small boats,
including working as a team member in advancing leadership roles.  Keelboat
and windsurfing experience preferred.

3. Certification in first aid and CPR, with certification preferred in
lakefront water safety, lifeguarding, motorboat use, and American Sailing
Association or US Sailing Instructor certification.

4. Significant competitive sailing experience in dinghies (college sailing
experience preferred)

5. Knowledge of college sailing boat-handling skills and tactics and ability
to effectively teach them.

6. Coaching and mentoring experience

7. Strong communication skills, including working with the public, parents,
club members, and staff

8.Skilled in leadership, performance evaluation and supervisory methods.
Prior experience in a managerial or leadership position preferred.
