Subject: Great Match Racing Opportunities in 2011!

Great Match Racing Opportunities Right Here in North America in 2011!
By Dave Perry
March 6, 2011
Hi...

A lot of work has been done this fall and winter to create many great match racing opportunities right here in the U.S. and North America for 2011. This will help keep costs going down and ISAF Rankings going up, as more North American match racers should be able to compete in more ISAF Grade 3, 2 and 1 events without needing to travel abroad.

This letter is intended as a helpful roadmap so you know what some of the opportunities are. It also is intended to encourage you to come do some match racing this year. Many of the events have clinics before them designed specifically to help your match racing level increase whatever level it is at now. The Clinics include specially designed drills to practice all aspects of match racing, including pre-starts, upwind and downwind tactics, and penalty killing, with extensive use of video replay. They are very helpful.

There are too many events to list all of them in this letter. For a complete listing of all the events in North America, go to:

The US SAILING Calendar: www.ussailing.org/Calendar/results.asp?categoryid=17

The ISAF Calendar: www.sailing.org/sailors/match-racing.php

Also, there is a wealth of information about match racing in the U.S. on the US SAILING Match Racing Web site, including a list of 25 clubs and centers holding match racing this year, information about the US Open and Women’s National Championships that begin with grassroots entry-level regatts, a 50 minute free DVD that I narrate explaining how match racing works and the fundamental tactics you need to know, and much much more.

The US SAILING Web site is at:

One center at which there is a lot of match racing planned is the Oakcliff Sailing Center in Oyster Bay, New York, about 45 minutes from New York City. I am on the Board there, and the executive director is Dawn Riley. We have ten (10) Swedish Match 40’s (along with six Shields and many other boats) that we use for match racing! You can come with your team of 5 or 6, or you can come with a partial team and Dawn will try to find crew for you. For those in the local area, there is weekly match race training on Tuesday evenings, and Grade 5 racing on Saturdays.

We have a series of Grade 3 regattas lined up this year, and are looking for teams to come sail. You don’t need to have experience in the Swedish Match 40’s; we’ll show you what we know:

The Spring Invitational is May 5-8, with May 5-6 clinic and May 7-8 racing.

The June Doubleheader, June 24-27, is also targeted to be Grade 3, and is actually two two-day regattas sailed back to back. You can sail in one or the other, or both. The winner of the Doubleheader receives an invitation to the Chicago Match Race Center’s Grade 2 event, August 12-14.

The Summer Invitational is July 28-31, and again is Grade 3 with two days of clinic and two days of racing.

The winner of that event receives an invitation to Oakcliff’s Grade 2 event, Aug 30 – Sept 3.

The Oakcliff International, Aug 30 – Sept 3, is Oakcliff’s Grade 2 event.

The Fall Invitational, October 28-30, is one day training and two days racing, at Halloween!

There is also an added reason to come sail the Swedish Match 40’s, besides being incredibly fun boats to match race. This year there is a series called the GRAND SLAM (press release attached), and the winner gets an invitation to the 2012 Congressional Cup. These are four Grade 2 events run on consecutive weekends in August and into September, beginning in Chicago (August 12-14), then going to Detroit (August 17-21), and finishing up with the Knickerbocker Cup (August 24-28) and the Oakcliff International (Aug 30 – Sept 3), which are sailed just minutes from each other. And the last two events will be sailed in Oakcliff’s Swedish Match 40’s!

For more information on all of the events and programs at the Oakcliff Sailing Center, including deadlines for submitting requests for invitations, go to: www.oakcliffsailing.org

Another center hosting a lot of match racing is the Chicago Match Race Center, in downtown Chicago. They have a very full program of match racing in their eight Tom 28’s and four Elliott 6m’s (the class being used by the women’s match racing event in the Olympics in 2012. In addition to their weekly racing, they are hosting many events that you can see on their Calendar. Specifically,

The Spring Invitational, May 27-28. A Grade 3 event and also an Area EK Qualifier for the USMRC.

The Chicago Open A and B, June 24-27, is also targeted to be Grade 3, and is also two two-day regattas sailed back to back. You can sail in one or the other, or both. The winner of the doubleheader receives an invitation to the Oakcliff Sailing Center’s Grade 2 event, Aug 30 - Sept 3, and the CMRC Summer Classic.

The CMRC Summer Classic, July 8-10, is a Grade 3, and the winner receives an invitation to the CMRC Grade 2 event in August.

The Chicago Match Cup, Aug 12-14, is CMRC’s Grade 2 event.

The Autumn Open, Sept 9-12, Grade 3, doubleheader event

CMRC Grade 1, Sept 28 – Oct 1, is CMRC’s inaugural Grade 1 event.

For more information on all of the events and programs at the Oakcliff Sailing Center, including deadlines for submitting requests for invitations, go to: www.chicagomatchrace.com

The west coast is just finishing up its new series called California Dreamin’, which is a three-event series on consecutive weekends in the end of February and into March. The winner receives an invitation to the Grade 2 Ficker Cup (March 17-19) and the winner of the Ficker Cup receives an invitation to the 2011 Congressional Cup (March 21-26).

And, as I said earlier, there is much more match racing going on in North America this year; just check out the Calendars.

For specific information on WOMEN’s match racing, I have compiled a paper called The Road to Rio, which can be viewed on the US SAILING Match Racing Web site.

There is also a lot of activity planned for YOUTH match racing, and I will appreciate you doing all you can to help spread the word to sailors who may be interested, and to program organizers in your area. We have four clinics & regattas scheduled in the west, north, east and south this year. The first two act as qualifiers for the prestigious Governors Cup (July 21-24). There is a paper on the US SAILING Match Racing Web site with all the details. The upper ages on these vary, and are targeted for older high school and college students.

Finally, there is much information about COLLEGIATE match racing on the intercollegiate match racing Web site at: www.collegematchrace.com

Hopefully this will motivate you to make some plans to do some match racing this year, or to work to take your team to the next level. Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can help in any way.

Also, please forward this email onto all your lists of sailors so we can get the word out about all these opportunities.

Thanks,

Dave Perry
