As strong winds are expected at several college 420 regattas this weekend (at
Yale, Navy, BC, and Mass Maritime), this seems to be a good time to offer this
tip. Sorry if the tabs don't line up. Same info attached in word doc if that
helps. Ken Legler

Coaching Tip: Heavy air 420 sailing in rough water and flat water, a comparison

Flat Water Rough water
Pinch Drive
Tight mainsail controls Tight mainsail controls except
vang
Ridiculously tight jib sheet Somewhat tight jib sheet
Very tight vang Not so tight vang
3:1 mainsheet for quick and big ease 4:1 mainsheet since vang is not
restricting ease
Flat boat Slight heel to keep
waves out of boat
Centerboard max down Centerboard back a couple
inches to relieve helm
Tight hiking strap in case of auto tack Loose strap to hike out farther
