This is the first year in quite some time that we have had the full complement of 20 teams competing at the Navy Spring Women's Interconference Regatta. When the sailors arrived, temperatures were around 40 degrees under sunny skies and a 15 knot NW breeze. A windward / leeward course was set in the Severn River off the Robert Crown Center. A division started the day in FJs, while B division sailed 420s. After the first set, the wind lightened up and became extremely shifty and puffy. 8 races per division were sailed in the northwesterly which got spottier as the day went on. The last few races saw puffs roll through on the final runs which led to the entire fleet converging on the finish line at the same time. The wind then shifted east and the fleet went in for a break while the course was reconfigured off Triton Point. Three more races were completed per division in 5-10 knots before lightening winds forced the end of racing for the day. Managing the racing throughout a very challenging day was LT Ben Herring and his team of Midshipmen. Dick Morin, Brian Clancy and Allison Jolly heard one protest, which was disallowed and one redress request, where Rhode Island was granted average points in race 8 A. Sunday: Sunday started out with a SW wind at 8-10 knots under sunny skies and relatively warm temperatures. Racing began at 9:30 off Triton Point. After a few puffy and shifty races, the wind shifted to the south and began to steady out and increase. After a short lunch break, the fleet headed out for the last four races per division in a steady 15 knot southerly with 2 foot waves. The regatta was completed by 2:30. After the fleet returned to shore, the protest committee of Dick Morin, Sandy Grosvenor and Ramsey Key started out with a new hearing to determine additional redress requests in race 8A. After meeting with the entire A fleet, they determine to grant redress in the race to URI, Navy, Conn. College, Bowdoin and Roger Williams. Four more protest were then heard, resulting in DSQs for Charleston, MIT and Roger Williams. Georgetown is the winner of the 2012 Navy Spring Women's Interconference Regatta.
