2012 NEISA Team Race Championship
April 28-29, 2012
MIT
Boats: FJs (primarily), Fireflies (consolation only)
SUN:
35 races were sailed - the remaining RR2, 1 sail-off for 6th, and a
final 6 RR were sailed in a variety of breezes. We had a Westerly at
about 4-8 knots until about lunchtime, when the breeze clocked right.
We then had blasts from as far left as W, and as far right as N, with
a velocity range of 5-20 knots. All of Sunday's races were in MIT's
FJs. Courses were collegiate N's.
Many thanks are needed: Finish boat duties went to Fran Charles and
Eben Freeman. Mike O'Connor helped with course management. Bill Healy
was the NEISA rep. Wally Corwin led a team of dock staff who kept the
sailboat and umpire boat fleets in service. Eric Gibber was astute at
scoring and messaging the next rotations. Alden Reid set up the
scoring matrix and rotation generator. Karen Benet and her pooch Bella
assisted Matt(y) Cohen with running the starts.
A special thanks goes out to our umpire crew. Thanks to chief umpire
Steve Wolff and his team of umpires - Sunday we had Bobby Martin,
Becca Dellenbaugh, Matt Conover and Niko Kostatos join up with the
returning crew from Saturday: Kerry Sullivan, Greg Keily, Peter Johns,
John Tagliamonte, Austin Kana, John Moulthrop, Jeff Dusek, Brendan
Hurd, and Josh Leighton. Many flags were thrown, including one Yellow
that resulted in a disallowed protest. Thanks to Harvard Sailing and
MIT crew for providing additional boats for umpiring.
Congrats to the Boston College Eagles for winning the 2012 NEISA Team
Racing Championship for the Fowle Trophy, winning a tie-break over
Brown and Roger Williams. Congrats to the Bears and Hawks who also
earned a berth to go to the ICSA/APS Team Race Nationals in Austin.

SAT:
Competitors arrived at the Wood Sailing Pavilion early and then headed
over to Walker Memorial for a spectacular ceremony honoring the donors
and contributors who helped make the new fleets and floating docks
possible. The celebration was catered and there were short speeches
and a video honoring Lowell North as the dock was dedicated on his
behalf by Terry Kohler. Many influential and inspirational people were
in attendance including past sailing masters, distinguished faculty,
and the entire regatta.
62 races sailed on a collegiate N, with wind from the WSW-NW, ranging
from 3-13 knots. The two Groups (Group A and Group B, as seeded by the
NEISA seeding committee), sailed alternating flights for 30 races to
get down to 8 teams. One sail-off was needed to break a tie after this
round. A consolation round was sailed in Fireflies to determine places
9-12. The first Gold round was completed (races between teams from the
same Group carried over), and 9 races of Gold RR2 were sailed. 19 more
races need to be sailed to complete RR2, at which point we'll go into
a final 6.
A huge thanks to all of the folks who made day 1 go smoothly. Wally
Corwin and the dockstaff did a great job handling minor breakdowns.
Reid Van Gorder spent a long day on the finish boat. Eric Gibber and
Bruno Faviero were on hand to enter finishes, expedite rotations, and
keep things live online. Alden Reid wrote a slick rotation/score
sheet. Mike O'Connor was on hand to tweak marks and ferry out
supplies. Matt Cohen ran the starts.
Thanks to MIT Crew and Harvard Sailing for donating additional
powerboats for umpiring and RC work.
Another thanks goes out to our team of umpires who held a couple
hearings and flew many flags. Chief Ump: Steve Wolff. Umpires: Kerry
Sullivan, Greg Keily, Peter Johns, John Tagliamonte, Matt Knowles,
Austin Kana, John Moulthrop, Jeff Dusek, Brendan Hurd, Brooks Reed,
Josh Leighton, and Janel Zarkowsky.
