Named for Vice Admiral James Pine, Superintendent of the Coast Guard
Academy when the Jacobs Rock sailing facility was built prior to World War
II, the event began in 1943 as the International Star Class Championship of
the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association. The US Coast Guard Academy
had a fleet of stars at the time and the event was listed as an “official
ICYRA Championship”, similar to the McMillan Cup and was held in Stars
until 1953. From 1954-1976 it was and "All-Star" team race between NEISA
and MAISA, sailed in Ravens and then Shields. For the next eleven years,
the format was match racing. In 1988, it reverted to fleet racing, in J22s.
Coast Guard and at least four other NEISA teams are chosen to compete, with
unfilled other District berths going to additional NEISA teams
