During the turbulent times of 1968, Captain Hurst and his wife, Chris were
requested by officers in the United States Navy to move to Hanover, NH to
assist in their ROTC program at Dartmouth College, which had fallen into
hard times during the protesting of the era. Sacrificing a promising career
in the higher ranks of the US Navy, Capt. Hurst answered his call to duty.
Upon arrival in Hanover, the long time sailor was happy to learn that
Dartmouth had a sailing team. Though it was in a rather disorganized state
at the time, Capt. and Mrs Hurst fell in love with the kids of Dartmouth
Sailing, and would begin a journey with the program that would last the
rest of their lives. There is no doubt that the Dartmouth Sailing Team as
it exists today would not be possible without the tireless efforts of the
Hursts. This morning, Mrs Hurst herself was on hand at her regatta to share
stories and baked goods with all the competitors and coaches. We are all
very thankful to have her in our lives.

Truly champagne conditions on Mascoma Lake greeted the Mrs. Hurst
competitors today. The NW breeze built through the first few sets to
eventually be gusting into the low 20s in knots. The breeze tapered
slightly towards the end of the day as the final set was completed. The
Yale Bulldogs were dominant and hold a solid lead heading into day two. Big
thanks to Dartmouth alums Ed Jude Glackin '11 and Bernie Roesler '12 for
logging over eight straight hours on their beloved Mascoma today.
