Report*

*Subject:* McMillan Cup at Navy

Sunday on the Chesapeake brought more typical fall conditions with a solid
8-12 knot northwesterly breeze and clear sunny skies.

After a brief postponement, PRO Keith Jacobs got racing underway. Mass
Maritime started smart jumping out to a substantial lead that they would
not relinquish to get the gun, Navy recovered from a poor start to nail a
second while regatta leader NY Maritime also came back from a poor start to
take 4th.

For the fourth race, the oscillations and puff/lull sequence continued.
Navy stayed in phase to punch out ahead and led wire to wire for the bullet
while Mass stayed close to grab second and KP taking in 3rd. For the fifth
and final race, a 5 leg course was designated with the top four spots all
truly up for grabs. Navy, KP, NY Maritime and Mass Maritime jumped of the
line as the breeze stayed in a right phase. Mass rounded the top mark
first and remained up front to win the race. Navy passed NY Maritime on
the first run and then covered the rest of the race to take second with NY
in third. KP finished 4th.

In the end, Navy squeaked out a one point victory over Mass with NY
Maritime just one point further back.

There was one request for redress by Coast Guard in race 5 which was
granted and one request for breakdown points by Army which was also granted.

Our sincere thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this year’s event
a success including PRO Keith Jacobs and his RC staff, Chief Judge Dan
Trammell and his jury and the NASS social committee who served all comers
from both the McMillan Cup as well as the Fall Keelboat Promotional Regatta.

Navy dedicated this year’s regatta to long time Navy volunteer coach Bill
MaClay who passed away earlier this fall. Sixty years ago in 1952, Bill
won the McMillan Cup as skipper of the team from Williams College. Bill’s
family was on hand and his son Jim helped present the trophies today.

Next up at Navy is the Kennedy Cup 2,3,4 November.
