To all, Saturday, March 23:
The 2013 Aaron Szambecki Team Race got off to a great start this morning. It was also a great opportunity for the sailors to learn about Aaron Szambecki '96 and the true value of the lasting friendships that college sailing is known for. Although only 16 races were completed with a very mobile and fickle breeze, the teams enjoyed some fine Virginia sunshine and some great festivities. Tomorrow's forecast promises some great breeze and we look forward to seeing it. A big thanks goes out to the ODU Monarchs who ran off some great races today. And a special shout out to the members of Towne Point Yacht Club for providing lunch to the sailors, umpires, and spectators during the wind delay. We would also be remiss in not mentioning the first ever SailGate that was put on at this year's Szambecki Team Race. A large contingent of ODU students led by Dan Farley came out to give some very spirited support to the Monarch sailors and it was greatly appreciated. Boston College currently leads a very tight field with a 4-0 record. Sunday, March 24: Overcast skies brought colder temperatures but plenty of wind as the first two round robins were completed shortly before the 3 pm cutoff. There was just enough time to get in a sail-off race for 4th and 5th places as well. In all 57 races were sailed. Again another thanks goes out to the ODU Monarch sailors who stuck it out through wind delays, cold, rain, and sleet over the weekend to get in the races for another highly successful Szambecki Team Race. They certainly earned their breakfast sponsored by Yorgo's Bageldashery of Norfolk! Chief Umpire Christin Accattella and her great team handled the protests on the water. Many thanks to Rob Overton, Sam Stokes, Jeff Borland, Sandy Grosvenor, Rob Rowlands, Sam Ficksman, John Mooney, Steve Wrigley, Carrie Greene, and Eric Johnson for making it to this year's regatta. We also want to thank East Coast Embroidery for the awesome Sherpa Blankets that were handed out to each sailor and umpire. And also thanks to the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Randy Stokes, Gray Kiger, and Ed Whitmore for the use of their powerboats. In the end the sailors from Stanford University came out on top, winning the 2013 Aaron Szambecki Team Race with an 11-3 record.
