You know what Android needs? Yet another app store for distributing Android apps. As if the official Android Market, AndAppStore, SlideMe, Storeoid, Mykandi, Handmark, et al, weren’t enough, Vodafone is reportedly making its own distribution method for Android apps.
Vodafone’s “Android App Shop” will launch in eight European markets: Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom. According to developer BlueMedialab, the market will be part of Vodafone’s 360 experience where users depend only on the carrier to obtain content. What will set this new market apart from the Android Market? Not much. The App Shop will have the same revenue split as the Market (70-30 in the developer’s favor), will ban adult apps, and is contacting the same developers who have popular apps in the Android Market. There will be two features of the App Shop that the Market should have adopted months ago: market-based prices and carrier billing. The Vodafone App Shop will allow developers to set prices based on the market of customers rather than where they live. They will give devs more options for setting affordable prices based on location. App purchasing will also be aided by removing Google Checkout in favor of being billed directly by Vodafone.
