We do treat "." specially in IDNA because that's part of domain name.

Likewise, IRI should treat '/', '#', spaces etc specially as part of URL handling.

(if we ever get around to do email, i expect i18n email identifiers to handle a separate sets of symbols)

That's an interesting idea. Maybe all homographs of the reserved
characters should also be reserved, which would mean they must always be
percent-escaped.
