I am answering Jasper Stoodley's message over Idrisi-L since the question
was posted there and the answer may be of general interest. However, I
suggest that others that may have installation-specific questions address
them to our Technical Support ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) in order to cut down on
traffic on the list. We are happy to help all users who have questions about
this regardless of whether you have a support contract.
The Windows 2000 Help System states that:
"Users will not be able to run most programs written for previous
versions of Windows because previous versions of Windows either did not
support file system and registry security (Windows 95 and Windows 98) or
shipped with lax default security settings (Windows NT). If Users have
problems running legacy applications on newly installed NTFS systems, then
do one of the following:
* Install new versions of the applications that are certified for
Windows 2000.
* Move end users from the Users group into the Power Users group.
* Decrease the default security permissions for the Users group. This
can be accomplished by using the compatible security template. For more
information, see "Predefined security templates" in Related Topics."
As this indicates, your system administrator will be able to tailor the
rights of the Users Group so that you are comfortable with the level of
security granted. They provide a number of security templates. The one you
will probably want is the "Compatibility Template", about which Microsoft
says (in the Predefined Security Templates section):
"Some organizations may find it preferable to assign users, by
default, only as members of the Users group and then decrease the security
privileges for the Users group to the level where applications not certified
for Windows 2000 run successfully. The compatible template is designed for
such organizations. By lowering the security levels on specific files,
folders, and registry keys that are commonly accessed by applications, the
compatible template allows most applications to run successfully under a
User context."
Note that both releases of IDRISI32 were compiled for Windows NT. Thus they
are both subject to these guidelines. Finally, the response of a specific
software system to the new security features of Windows 2000 depends on the
file system used (NTFS or FAT32) and its use of registry features.
