RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITION
THE WOODS HOLE RESEARCH CENTER
Woods Hole, Massachusetts
The Woods Hole Research Center has a position open for a Research Assistant
with responsibilities in the management of Geographic Information Systems
and remote sensing data, and in the maintenance of GIS Lab computers and
peripherals.
Qualifications and Experience: Bachelor's or Master's degree in
environmental sciences such as ecology, geography, cartography, forestry, or
land use in developing nations. Required: Software skills: Windows NT/2000,
DOS, Microsoft Office including MS Access, IDRISI32, ArcView and/or ArcGIS,
Arc Info, ERDAS Imagine or ENVI. Preferred: Computer programming.
Portuguese, Spanish, or Russian language.
Responsibilities: Data Management - Assist in digital and paper map GIS and
remote sensing data management, archiving, writing digital data to CDROM and
DVD, metadatabase management, preparation of metadata, and conversion of
data to new media types. GIS and Remote Sensing - Digitizing of maps.
Scanning of documents and preparation of digital maps. GIS analysis and
modeling, data entry, graphics preparation, library research.

Start: March - April. Salary: Upper 20s
The Woods Hole Research Center's emphasis in research is on ecosystems and
includes such global issues as biotic impoverishment, climatic change,
sustainable development, and the role of biotic resources in support of
contemporary civilization. Interest and activities extend to the
interactions of science and public affairs, nationally and internationally.
