As I'm writing up slides to present at the M3AAWG meeting next week, it is seeming clear to me that a good term for different "i=" copies of the message is "version".
Maybe a version of a message, but it is an instance of a signature.

When a message goes through something like a mailing list, classing its output as a version probably makes sense.

Classing it as a version when it goes through an alias mechanism seems a bit odd.\

Classing it as a version when it merely goes through MTA relaying does not make obvious sense to me.

I think the current meta-descriptor you folks are using is that a message is 'handled'.  There is no obvious adjective or noun that that produces, but what about reaching down to the IP level and referring to each node in the sequence as a 'hop'?
