Without taking any position on whether the protocol should be run over IP
directly, or over UDP:

Your wording is a little unclear, so perhaps this comment is not needed, but
UDP does have a way of sending packets without a checksum, so you don't
necessarily have the computational overhead of computing/checking it
(although of course the field is always there - 2 bytes).
