That was it actually. Funny thing is I saw a post to the list about this earlier. But when I upgraded my first XP machine, I uninstalled the previous client (3.4 6167 build client), rebooted, and there were no remnants left behind. So on my next XP machine, I did the same thing, no remnants left behind (again 3.4 6167 build client). On the third XP machine, again with the same old build, remnants DID get left behind in program files\ifolder. Not sure why on the 3rd machine that happened. Once I removed the client, rebooted, removed the remnants, rebooted, installed the 3.6 client, rebooted, then all was fine (phew!).
