With layout.fruchterman.reingold() you can vary the y coordinates
while fixing the x, with somthing like

layout.fruchterman.reingold(g, minx=0, maxx=0)

so you can try this. Obviously, if you have too many edges, then there
is no way that you can arrange the graph and keep all of them nicely
visible.
