the canvas api is really turning out to be good, but its still not that easy to master all these technologies. Flex offers a much more integrated approach, and its open source even though its proprietery. The other thing i really like about flex is that it can then be run on AIR and give very nice looking user interfaces for the desktop. You can have a flex frontend and a python, java, php, whatever backend and have really nice apps. Its like you let the specialist do the job in each field. Whatever you learn, learn it well.
