Can you be specific what version/distribution of Linux you using?
Which player you used to play the media?

Check in 'gnome-volume-control' for volume level.

If you can hear sound while booting and cant hear while playing media,
try

$ yum install gstreamer-plugins-good gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-
plugins-ugly totem-gstreamer gstreamer-ffmpeg vlc

If you cant hear any audio , try this command

$ lspci | grep "Audio"

if this command returns nothing, Try these links.
