Hi, I am using ubuntu 9.10. Want to go for 11.10. How do i install without
affecting data in home folder?
Following is the output of fdisk.
My root is sda6 and /home is sda6. What back up should I take?

/dev/sda5 9816 35317 204833788 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda6 35318 37140 14643216 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 37141 59762 181711183+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 59763 60801 8345736 82 Linux swap / Solaris

One easy way would be to upgrade to 10.04, then to 10.10, followed by 11.04, and then last to 11.10. The other way would be to do a fresh installation. When you do a fresh install, use sda6 as root and sda7 as /home. MAKE SURE that you don't click on "format before use" (or similarly worded option) for sda7. That's about it. Nothing is ever deleted in /home during a fresh installation. Also remember to not change the fs-type of sda7 as well.

PS: I assumed you meant "/home is sda7."
