Commenced in 1961, the monument was completed in 1975. This obelisk topped by a glittering flame symbolizes the nations independence and strength. The flame is gilded with 35 kg of gold leaf. Visitors can take a lift up to a platform with a good view of Medan Merdeka Park, Istiqlal Mosque, and the city, if it is not too foggy. In the base of the monument, the National History Museum tells the history of Indonesias independence struggle in 48 dramatic dioramas.
