Dear Gang,

Here is some more stuff from the tower list that may be of interest to list
members. We now have 40 members in three days!

Don't know if it's still standing, but as recently as 3 or 4 years ago, the
PRR Tower at Indiana Harbor Canal, In was still standing, completely
surrounded by a Steel Mill. It sits just south of Hick Tower on the NYC if I
remember right. Anybody know how you can get a good shot of this without
renting a boat or Helicopter (don't put it past me!)????

Speaking of that site at http://www.uiuc.edu/ph/www/roma/towers - Jon Roma is
a good guy, and a tower nut as well.

I design websites for a living, so I would be happy to help any way I can in
setting up something.

Dear Frank and List,

Since I am a [disgruntled] Chicago-area expatriate living on "The Tundra," I
naturally pay close attention to my home town and favorite railroad stomping
ground, the Calumet River Region (encompassing northeastern Illinois and
northwestern Indiana for those unenlightened types). As of my last visit home
in June, Indiana Harbor Tower was indeed still standing. It is surrounded
completely--on the North, West and South by LTV Steel's massive former
Youngstown Steel & Tube Indiana Harbor Works and on the East by the Indiana
Harbor Ship Canal. It is, to say the very least, completely inaccessible,
unless you are an LTV employee or are crazy enough to attempt an amphibious
landing from the ship canal--note: do not get caught!

It can be viewed and photographed from afar, however. There is a moving
highway bridge south of the former Pennsylvania Railroad (Pittsburgh, Fort
Wayne & Chicago) right-of-way. Without benefit of having my maps handy, I am
going to say that this road is part of Indiana Route 912 where it crosses the
ship channel. If you park on the West bank, walk to the bridge and you can
see it, hard by the West bank. There is a bascule lift bridge still there,
pinned in the raised position, where the PRR/PFW&C used to cross the ship
channel, before the PRR was rerouted around this area through Lake Junction.
If I recall, there are still Pennsy position-light signals adjacent to the
right-of-way as well. Indeed, the whole area, including the tower, looks like
it did the day they stopped running through here.

I would recommend a long telephoto or zoom lens. I have shot the tower with
my 200mm fixed tele lens. Use of the same lens will reveal a breathtaking
squash shot of the gargantuan mills on both sides of the ship canal. You
might even get lucky enough to photograph something on the ex-NYC (Lake Shore
& Michigan Southern), now NS, main line. I have a real nice shot of Amtrak
#364 shooting across the bridge, with towering blast furnaces on both sides!

By the way, speaking of Jon Roma, I am happy to announce that Jon has joined
our growing community of 40 souls! Welcome aboard, Jon!
