Union wasn't a very exciting place, aesthetically speaking. Just a single
story building. I would imagine a more ornamental interlocker was there at
some point, but I don't know this for fact .... anybody have any insight on
that?

I have seen pictures of Limedale Tower around .... I think that there's a
shot of it with a northbound Monon train coming by in one of the two Monon
books (by Hilton or the Dolzall brothers). It was a pretty interesting
place, and to this day you can still go to the sight and get a pretty good
idea of how it was laid out.

Right up close to the diamond was the tower that protected the PRR-Monon
crossing. It was a standard PRR two-story design, with a VERY tall
smokestack, like many towers on the system. Right behind the tower
(southwest of it) was a single-story building that housed the CTC machine
that protected the railroad from Bridgeport, Ind. (just east of Plainfield,
on the far westside of Indy) to Limedale. I've heard different dates thrown
around as to when this CTC installation was put in place, but I think the
year I've heard most often was 1929. It was one of the first in the country,
regardless.

Limedale protected the end of double track coming out of Indy, and
controlled Summit Siding at Clayton, Ind., the Marion East and West lap
sidings at Coatesville, Ind., and the double track through Greencastle that
began at Alameda (on the east side G-castle, behind what used to be the IBM
plant) and ended at Limedale.

The foundation of Limedale is still there, as are many of the bricks that
encased the building. It looks like when CR crews bulldozed the joint back
in the early '80s, they just knocked it over, picked up most of the mess and
didn't worry too much about doing a thorough cleanup job. The coolest thing
about Limedale, in my opinion, is that much of the tile floor in the CTC
building is still in place (this is as of a year ago, last time I was
there). Kind of a wierd feeling, to walk on the floor of a building that no
longer exists!

Does anybody have scannable (is that a word?) shots of Limedale or Union?!
Would love to see them!
