I think I encountered a similar problem when beginning with an Ilohamail
setup from scratch.
In my case, editing
{path_to_Ilohamail}/source/themes/default/override.inc
finally gave me the desired full colour control.
I am not sure it needs to be this way, maybe simply commenting out the
option in override.inc would have given the desired results.
Unfortunately, I needed a webmail access urgently back then, so I chose
the quick and dirty path.
If you find a better solution, please share it!
