Abhshek ,
                your network interface is not functional .
I'm not sure what kind of network interface you are using , but if it is a 
PCI /onboard
LAN card , it should show up as eth0 when you do an "ifconfig" , if properly 
working .
lo is only the local loopback interface , not a network interface .
    Check  i) your network interface card is properly installed physically .
               ii) the appropriate driver for your network interface is 
statically
                   build into the kernel or inserted as a loadable module .
              iii) it has been properly configured for IP address and 
netmask and
                   gateway and nameserver (if applicable) , either 
statically or via
                   DHCP .
               iv) cables / wireless is connected to proper sockets / 
antennas .
Finally you should be able to ping the other machine sucessfully .
If in doubt look how to configure the network in your distribution's help 
/install guide .
