Good Config!

You mean, no additional Graphics card, apart from the one on the motherboard,
don't you?

Don't let the book give you an impression that you'll have to *always* use the
command-line. But learn the command line well because the use of command-line
will surely benefit you in many ways.

Redhat Linux 9.0 is *very* old. Please inform as many people in your
institution as possible, that Redhat Linux 9.0 is *VERY OLD*. Apparently,
Redhat Linux 9.0 is one such distro that I'm really disappointed with, because,
it tends to throw away users from *Linux* as a whole; unfortunately, that's the
only distro available throughout most colleges / universities without people
being aware of what it exactly is! Oh yes, please do inform that SOMEONE not to
RECOMMEND Redhat Linux 9.0

Might not run great with KDE / GNOME, but with XFCE, it might just be fine.

As suggested earlier, you can try the LIVE CD of Fedora (KDE based) or possibly
try Xubuntu or try Kubuntu. (If you cannot download them, I guess, the local
LUG will be able to help you out with a copy).

Kubuntu 8.04 / 8.10 on your machine should work just fine. The former has just
few more months of support now, but you can still use it, and possibly upgrade
in few months. (when you probably may have some more hardware ;) )
