workshops must be conducted for students such as practice in octave as an alternative for matlab,and like other softwares that students use in programming field or in animation field they should be made aware of using free softwares.....in my college most computer science have practical labs in linux they are using hardy they dont know how to do sql in ubuntu for me too i installed an ide codeblocks for doing c++ programs but it was a mess in configuring all that to view output so beginners may quit due to these difficulties and now a days compiz effects is the only thing that attract them to linux.......most people are not good in using open office too
