I do am experiencing the same problem with western digital passport essential drive. It works after removing ehci module. If ehci is removed the drive works in USB1 mean 12 Mbps, mean ~at 1MB with uhci moule.
I have tried lot of option even with latest kernel 2.6.28 but nothing worked. Think it has to do with USB2 Host controller compatibility etc.. But any how it works perfectly in windows xp..
