Were you connected to the internet? If so then Ubuntu tried to update itself
from the net. If your net connection is slow it will probably take a long
time according to the download. My advice is disconnect from the net and
start once again. I too had a similar problem and I solved it using the
above method.

Also make sure you are using the latest version of Ubuntu (9.04 or higher).
There is absolutely no problem in using an old one but the new ones are much
better.
