I had gone to CDAC one day to inquire about this ( On March 20th this year ) . The feedback I gathered from a discussion with Dr.Sulochana ( LTRC, CDAC Tvm ) was that :
* CDAC has spent time and money on the project * CDAC has to generate revenue of their own to run their operations * CDAC has to use whatever they have produced to generate income She agreed to discuss this [ the idea of releasing the dictionary under a free license ] with people higher in the CDAC heirarchy, but she did not express any hope. My feeling was that they are not really interested in doing any of this. They are also under the impression that free software operating systems are still hobbyist projects and there are not many users and that if they release it under free license, they wont be able to sell it to anyone. If someone could give them a proposal for buying the dictionary ( they will not sell it to individuals .. duh !! ) eg: IT Mission or some such govt. agency , they will readily sell it and has no issues with the buyer releasing it under any license. Filing an RTI might help in finding out who funded the effort and whether it was indeed public money . Instead of asking questions about CDAC here , it would be better if someone could actually go there and find out what is to be done etc. Right now, filing an RTI for finding out who funded the study/data collection and why was its full source not released would be the best move IMHO Regards, Ashik S --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ "Freedom is the only law".
