You can setup IBus in following way...
1)
In Gnome:
System>Prefrences>IBus Prefrences
In KDE:
KMenu>Applications>Settings>IBus Prefrences
2) If a window appears asking "IBus daemon not started, start it now?"
Click 'Yes'
3) IBus Preferences window will appear
In the Input Method tab, Select an input method.
You will be able to find malayalm, then select any input type
(swanalekha, mozhi...etc) I prefer Mozhi or swanalekha.
Click Add. You may add as much input methods as you want.
Close the window. You will be able to see an keyboard icon on the
notification area
4) Now open your document editor (openoffice document), click the above
mentioned icon & select the input method. You can change the input method
anytime clicking it
5) Start typing
