The network manager icon is still available I believe. Can you just try to add the network manager applet to the top panel with the sound applet and so on... ? You just need to right click on the panel and select add to panel. Search for the Network Manager applet and add it. You can drag and drop it anywhere in the panel as you like. The network applet in karmic is even cooler. The user-interface is even simpler and it does show you the status of the net-connection. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. The network manager works probably better than Jaunty so the connection problem *could* lie else- where.
