i am guessing that the pc is supposed to be having an intel graphic
accelerator(845G). and historically intel hardware support under linux is
pretty good especially so for the older ones. as such any of distros having
recent versions of kernel should work fine with it. since your target system
is low on resources i would recommend distros that use light weight DEs like
Xfce, LXDE etc.

i have managed to install xubuntu on similarly low specced Gateway Machine
(pentium III stuff). Bodhi Linux is also a similar light weight distro.

also can you please explain your statement " ..........which failed being
written on HD"
i .e whether the installer were unable to copy the files to HDD or drives
weren't being detected at all ??

good luck
